VRT (Vertical Reflex Therapy) is incorporated into a conventional reflexology treatment and is used at the beginning and / or end of a treatment. As the name suggests it is done in a standing (vertical) position, where the reflexes on the top of the feet are worked instead of the reflexes on the soles of the feet.

When standing we are bearing weight down onto the feet; this seems to create a faster and more direct link between the reflexes and parts of the body, thereby accelerating the response. The hands are also worked in conjunction with the feet and also 'zonal triggers' around the ankles. This creates a stronger link between the hands and feet.

Lynne Booth pioneered the VRT technique when working in a residential nursing home with wheelchair patients. Working on the soles of the feet was not an option for her, so, adapting to circumstances, she found she could obtain excellent results from pressing the patients foot firmly onto the foot rest of their wheelchair while working on the upper part of their foot.

With further work she discovered seemingly new or deeper reflexes on the tops of the feet and realised that weight-bearing was the key to faster results from reflexology. And so Vertical Reflex Therapy was born!

VRT can be extremely useful for orthopaedic conditions, including back problems, neck and shoulder pain, hip pain, knee problems, ankle and foot pain.

However, VRT is not just confined to musculo-skeletal problems, as with standard reflexology, VRT helps to restore balance and reduce stress, which in turn triggers a healing response within the body.
